The weather today is rainy with a hint of a chill in the air, which means it is perfect for beef stew and some fresh bread, preferably homemade. These are the days when I am glad I have a few recipes laying around that are the absolute best when it comes to comfort food. I was lucky in that I was able to ask friends and family members for their recipes over the years and then I just streamlined them according to my own particular preferences to get the flavor I wanted. Now that I have become known for a few of my meals, I am more likely to share them and let others experience these amazing flavors!
One thing about me is that I like meals that are simple to make, but delicious. And for those that believe this is not possible, think again. I will admit that making beef stew takes a bit more work than some easy-to-prepare meals, but once you get the final product you will thank yourself for putting in the time to make it as it is truly worth the effort. The technique is simple, although a smidge more time-consuming, and I consider it more of an act of love for my friends. The following are instructions for great beef stew.
First, the meat has to be browned in order to allow the flavor to marinate. Next, the beef must be braised with a few vegetables in a mixture of red wine and beef broth. Once you get to the end, you can add more chopped vegetables so they can retain their color, character, and most importantly, flavor. The end result is a beef stew that is hearty, similar to a pot roast that you eat in a bowl. How hearty and flavorful is this beef stew? Well, there are rarely people that eat my beef stew that have one bowl since it is so yummy. To add to the meal, I suggest eating it with fresh bread buns with some butter and you are set for a few days, possibly almost a week.
For women that are expecting, you can skip the red wine in the stew. You know what I found out while shopping for an alternative to red wine in my beef stew? I discovered a non-alcoholic wine called Fre that tastes and smells like wine but has none of the alcohol. It is cheap and does the trick in terms of providing a similar flavor to the alcoholic variety. The beauty of making a beef stew is that you really get out of it what you put into it. But then again, the majority of prepared meals are like that, right?
But what I really mean to say is that if you follow all of the instructions carefully, the end result you will love is it will be delicious and you know that you can always make it on those chilly or cold days that you plan to spend in the house. If you need to see it being made, of course, there are videos that you can check out loud until you get the hang of it. But I promise that once you do, you will include it as one of the go-to meals in your household.
